Everything You Need to Know About Fold

Fold was designed around something pretty simple: a wheelchair user should be able to know their weight without first figuring out how to get onto a scale that was never designed for them.

Here you can find the practical details — how big Fold is, what chairs fit, how much weight it supports, where it should be used, how accessibility shaped the design, and what to expect from the app, warranty, and everyday use.

Size and Fit

Fold is designed to provide enough usable platform space for a wide range of manual and power wheelchair configurations while still folding down for storage at home.

Fold size, weight, and platform height.
Open dimensions48 in long x 36 in wide x 1 in high
Folded dimensions36 in long x 24 in wide x 2 in thick
Product weight23 lbs
Platform heightUnder 1 in in use

Before purchasing, compare your wheelchair or mobility device dimensions with the usable Fold platform. Power chairs, accessories, bags, cushions, oxygen equipment, and other routinely carried items can all affect the overall footprint and combined weight.

Weight Capacity

1,200 lb

Combined user + wheelchair + equipment

The capacity applies to the total load placed on Fold — not only the person’s body weight. This matters especially for power wheelchairs, where the chair itself may weigh several hundred pounds before the user and additional equipment are included.

Wheelchair and Mobility Device Compatibility

Fold is designed for manual and power wheelchairs and can accommodate many mobility scooters and other mobility devices when their wheelbase, dimensions, and combined weight fit within the Fold platform and 1,200 lb capacity.

Many mobility scooters and other mobility devices may also work when:

  • The wheelbase fits safely on the platform
  • All required contact points remain on the weighing surface
  • The combined load stays within the 1,200 lbs combined capacity

Compatibility depends on the actual dimensions and configuration of the mobility device rather than simply its category.

Accessibility by Design

Accessibility was not added to Fold after the product was designed. It shaped the platform from the beginning.

Fold was designed with accessible patient-weighing considerations, including the space needed to accommodate a wheelchair user while remaining seated.

Designed with accessible patient-weighing considerations and to meet applicable accessibility standards.

Designed to meet the U.S. Access Board's M303 standards for accessible medical diagnostic equipment used by patients seated in a wheelchair — platform width, platform depth, surface slope, and entry level changes — with slip resistance and seated display readability addressed alongside them.

Fold Smart Scale against the federal Standards for Accessible Medical Diagnostic Equipment, 36 CFR Part 1195.
SectionRequirementFoldStatus
M303.2.2Platform width — 36 in minimum.36 in wide platform.Meets
M303.2.3Platform depth — 48 in minimum for single-side entry and exit; 40 in minimum for pass-through.48 in deep platform, accommodating both pass-through and single-side entry.Meets
M303.2.5Platform surface slope — no steeper than 1:48 in any direction.Rests flat on the floor in use, with no built-in slope.Meets
M303.2.6Edge protection — 2 in minimum on non-entry sides, required where the platform is raised more than 1½ in.Operational height is under 1 in, below the threshold at which edge protection is required. Not applicable
M303.3Changes in level at entry — up to ¼ in may be vertical; ¼ in to ½ in must be beveled no steeper than 1:2; over ½ in must be ramped.Curved entry edge under 1 in, designed as a roll-on rather than a step-up, with no blunt vertical lip.Meets
M304.2.1Slip resistance — the standing surface of a stand-on scale must be slip-resistant. M303 sets no traction criterion for wheelchair platforms.Textured, slip-resistant platform with rubberized stability feet. Designed in because people do step onto the platform even though Fold is a roll-on scale. Fold provides no standing supports and is not sold as a stand-on scale, so M304.2.2 does not apply.Addressed
M306Instructions and information communicated to patients through the equipment.Backlit on-device display sized and angled to be read from a seated position, with a perimeter light strip signalling measurement status, and readings sent to the Fold Health app over Bluetooth. M306's technical criteria have not been verified line by line, so this is stated as a design input rather than a conformance claim.Addressed

The MDE Standards apply to equipment. ADA obligations apply to healthcare providers and facilities, and depend on the whole care environment rather than on any single device.

Where Fold Should Be Used

Fold should be placed on a surface that is:

  • Hard
  • Level
  • Stable

Good examples include:

  • Hardwood
  • Tile
  • Vinyl
  • Concrete
  • Other hard, flat flooring

Fold should be used on a hard, level surface. Soft carpet, thick rugs, mats, or uneven flooring can affect how load is transferred through the platform and may affect the consistency of the reading.

How Fold Calculates Your Weight

Fold measures the combined load of:

You + your wheelchair + the equipment on your chair

The Fold Health app then subtracts the chair weight you have saved.

Scale reading
242.8 lb
Chair weight
32.0 lb
Your weight
210.8 lb

Users can enter their chair weight directly or select a supported chair from the Fold Health chair library. An estimated chair weight creates an estimated body-weight calculation — update the chair weight later when a more precise number is available.

Accuracy and Measurement

Fold is designed for consistent weight tracking when used on a hard, level surface. Final numerical accuracy specifications will be published following completed production validation.

Fold Health App

The scale gives you the measurement. Fold Health helps you understand what changes over time.

  • Connects to Fold over Bluetooth Low Energy
  • Stores your saved chair weight and subtracts it from the combined reading
  • Supports more than one saved chair, so the right weight is used each time
  • Keeps your readings so you can see how weight changes over time
  • Marks whether a chair weight is estimated or known

Connectivity and supported phones

Fold connects to the app over Bluetooth Low Energy 5.0+. Fold Health supports Android and iOS 14 or later.
